South African History Online
"South African History Online (SAHO) is a non-partisan people's history project. It was established in June 2000 as a non-profit Section 21 organisation, aiming to address the biased way in which the history and cultural heritage of South Africans was represented in our educational and cultural institutions.
SAHO's mission is to break the silence of our past and to create the most comprehensive online encyclopedia of South African history and culture. SAHO has committed itself to involve heritage and academic institutions as well as ordinary South Africans in rewriting our history and in that way contributing to reconciliation, the building of a common humanity and a non-racial, non sexist and democratic society.

The Auschwitz Album

L'album di Auschwitz è una testimonianza visiva del processo di omicidio di massa di Auschwitz-Birkenau. Si tratta di un documento unico, testimonianza degli arrivi dei deportati in un campo di sterminio.

L'album fu trovato nel 1944 da Lilly-Jacob Zelmanovic Meier e donato allo Yad Vashem nel 1980, dove è stato restaurato ed è tuttora conservato.

"The photos were taken at the end of May or beginning of June 1944, either by Ernst Hofmann or by Bernhard Walter, two SS men whose task was to take ID photos and fingerprints of the inmates (not of the Jews who were sent directly to the gas chambers). The photos show the arrival of Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia. Many of them came from the Berehov Ghetto, which itself was a collecting point for Jews from several other small towns."

Progetto pilota con la Biblioteca del Congresso

La Biblioteca del Congresso dispone di un Catalogo online di stampe e fotografie che comprende oltre 1 milione di immagini (in continuo aumento) disponibili in rete da oltre 10 anni.

Nel giugno 2007, è nata la nostra prima collaborazione con un istituto civico avente come obiettivo l’aumento della partecipazione delle persone nel descrivere il contenuto di una raccolta pubblica di fotografie.

I principali obiettivi di questo progetto pilota erano principalmente un assaggio dei tesori nascosti nella ricchissima collezione della Biblioteca del Congresso e, secondariamente, come i tag aggiunti dagli utenti come te potessero arricchirla ulteriormente.

Ti invitiamo dunque a descrivere le fotografie presenti nella raccolta della Biblioteca del Congresso su Flickr aggiungendo tag o lasciando commenti.*

Robert Capa's Lost NegativesE' tornata alla luce la 'valigia' segreta di Robert Capa. Le valigia erano custodite in un luogo imprecisato di Città del Messico, tra i possedimenti di un ex diplomatico messicano.
A rivelarlo il New York Times, precisando che nelle tre valigie sono contenuti migliaia di negativi di fotografie che Robert Capa scattò durante la Guerra Civile spagnola prima di di lasciare l'Europa per trasferirsi in America nel 1939."

Le raccolte fotografiche – da quelle degli studi agli album di famiglia – non sono state utilizzate appieno dalla ricerca storica. Eppure già dalla fine dell'Ottocento è stata avvertita l'esigenza di creare grandi archivi fotografici, nella consapevolezza che le immagini “sarebbero state, entro un secolo, i documenti più preziosi”.
La ricerca si propone di costituire un database di immagini inedite, tratte dagli “archivi” familiari, sulla memoria del quotidiano, in collaborazione con i docenti del Polo di Rimini e del Dipartimento di Discipline Storiche che aderiranno al progetto.

"The system of forced labor camps was established in the first years of the Communist regime in the Soviet Union. It became essential part of the Soviet repressive system. The Communist takeovers in the Eastern and Central Europe during the World War II led to mass arrests of non-Communist politicians and people identified as class-enemies. Many of them were sentenced to forced labor camps. In 1952 the International League for the Rights of Man was able to document the existence of more than 400 forced labor camps in Central and Eastern Europe. Il Comune di Roma, nell’ambito delle proprie attività culturali, promuove l’iniziativa “L’Album di Roma – Fotografie private del Novecento”, un progetto di conservazione della memoria storica e dell'identità della città di Roma attraverso le fotografie delle raccolte private che vengono messe in comune dai cittadini nell’ambito delle seguenti aree tematiche:

- Immagini di vita quotidiana;
- Immagini di persone all'interno del paesaggio urbano di Roma;
- Relazione tra la vita quotidiana e gli eventi pubblici storici.

The September 11 Digital Archive

The September 11 Digital Archive uses electronic media to collect, preserve, and present the history of the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania and the public responses to them. Funded by a major grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and organized by the American Social History Project at the City University of New York Graduate Center and the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University, the Digital Archive will contribute to the on-going effort by historians and archivists to record and preserve the record of 9/11 by: collecting first-hand accounts of the 9/11 attacks and the aftermath (especially voices currently under-represented on the web), collecting and archiving emails and digital images growing out of these events, organizing and annotating the most important web-based resources on the subject, and developing materials to contextualize and teach about the events. The Digital Archive will also use these events as a way of assessing how history is being recorded and preserved in the twenty-first century and as an opportunity to develop free software tools to help historians to do a better job of collecting, preserving, and writing history in the new century. Our goal is to create a permanent record of the events of September 11, 2001. In the process, we hope to foster some positive legacies of those terrible events by allowing people to tell their stories, making those stories available to a wide audience, providing historical context for understanding those events and their consequences, and helping historians and archivists improve their practices based on the lessons we learn from this project.

Le colloque "Littérature et photographie" se donnera notamment pour ambition de pointer comment les relations entre photographie et littérature, dès les années 1840 et jusqu’à nos jours, ont été porteuses d’enjeux esthétiques, politiques et sociaux majeurs. Il fera le point sur cet objet d’étude relativement nouveau, à la croisée de plusieurs disciplines, mais dont l’actualité de la production scientifique manifeste qu’il intéresse de nombreux jeunes chercheurs.

La storia nella fotografia

Testimone e complice delle vicende umane da oltre centocinquant’anni, la fotografia ha un rapporto privilegiato con l’indagine poliziesca e scientifica. Lo storico – per il quale una fonte che unisca magicamente passato e presente (restituendoci l’impronta di un istante irripetibile) dovrebbe rappresentare un’occasione più unica che rara – nutre da sempre verso l’immagine tecnica una diffidenza solo in parte motivata. Fonte per la storia e (inseparabilmente) agente di storia, la fotografia attende ancora una riflessione metodologica e soprattutto ricerche sul campo che ne verifichino la leggibilità e ne promuovano l’inserimento tra gli strumenti di lavoro dello storico. Esibita spesso come prova inconfutabile, la fotografia è un indizio ambiguo e aperto a molteplici letture, strumento problematico del paradigma indiziario.
